Stay Safe at Fort Lauderdale’s Beaches

Our sunny coast is not void of sandy beach pests, so we wanted to share some information about sandfly prevention. These biting insects go by many names, like “biting midges”, “sandflies”, “no-see’ums”, or “punkies”. They love to pop up during beach vacation season, causing some folks to experience allergic reactions. Others are unaffected by sandflies, but it’s always a good measure to do all you can to protect yourselves.

Identification

Sandflies are smaller than most insects, typically measuring the very tip of a pencil. You can sometimes feel their bite or just an itchy sensation while lounging at the beach. Bites tend to appear on skin exposed while spending time on the beach.

Prevention

You can avoid being outside during the dawn and dusk hours or when the air is still. If you do venture out during these times, wear clothing like closed-toe shoes, long pants, ankle-covering socks, and long-sleeved shirts. We also recommend insect repellent—you can find various all-natural solutions online!

Treatment

If bites do arise, you should recover from irritation in a quick manner. Some at-home remedies include deodorant applied to bites, rubbing alcohol wipes, toothpaste, and a water-baking soda paste.
